The legendary BLOCKBUSTER Mard is celebrating 35 years as it released on 8th November 1985. The film was the big Diwali release of 1985 and till date remains the only film in the history of Hindi cinema to record cent per cent collections in the pre Diwali period.

The pre Diwali hit is worst in Delhi / UP, East Punjab, Rajasthan and CI but the figures of this film made it look that pre Diwali does not affect box office collections. It all came with a record release in these circuits and the highest print count ever across India

The film released on Friday and Diwali was on Tuesday but even on Diwali day the film was recording housefull numbers even in Delhi city and East Punjab where Diwali day hardly sees people come to theatres. There had been huge BLOCKBUSTERS prior to Mard like Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) and Muqaddar Ka Sikander (1978) which had pre diwali releases but these films could not not see 100% collections all over like Mard despite very good openings as some cinemas recorded under capacity.

There have been big releases post Mard which had a pre Diwali release but they have always had that pre Diwali lag and fired post Diwali. The craze of the film on release was such that it can be claimed to be the biggest initial in history considering it came pre Diwali. Obviously films released after have had bigger numbers but that is all down to bigger releases and inflation.

In Mumbai and Delhi / UP circuits the film broke the records of Coolie which released in 1983 and in East Punjab it broke the long standing record of Dharam Veer (1977). The records in Punjab came despite no film opening well for the previous 18 months due to an insurgency in the state and Mard came to shatter all records even on pre Diwali.

The film eventually scored huge with business of around 450 crore nett in todays terms. The year saw 2 huge blockbusters with Mard and Ram Teri Ganga Maili and though Mard was behind Ram Teri Ganga Maili in Mumbai circuit by around 1 crore nett  it did higher numbers than Ram Teri Ganga Maili in the North and East. The film was also the biggest solo blockbuster of Amitabh Bachchan.

100% Opening with Biggest possible release and that too in Pre-Diwali days. Only Amitabh Bachchan can afford this type of stardom. INSANE!

Mard and RTGM were the top2 Grossere and both were "Huge Blockbuster" - It ends the debate of RTGM emerging ATBB verdict after update. i am sure, many guys were expecting it to be an ATBB. Means, MPK is the only ATBB of 80s and even that is not confirmed 100%.

Mard is Biggest Solo Blockbuster of Amitabh Bachchan means Salman khan has 2 Films and Srk 1 Film Bigger than BigB's Biggest Solo hit.

The Next Rewind story BOI gonna publish is for another historic hit - Raja Hindustani on 15th Nov.

Amitabh Bachchan's confirmed Blockbusters :

Sholay (ATBB)
Muqaddar ka Sikandar (ATBB) -> Old BOI : 8.5 crores. After update : 11-12 crores
Coolie (ATBB) -> Old BOI : 9 crores. After update : Minimum 14 crores.
Mard (BB-ATBB*) -> Old BOI : 8 crores. After update : 11-12 crores.
Amar Akbar Anthony (BB)
Parvarish (BB)
Namak Halal (BB)
Deewar (BB)
Lawaaris (BB) -> Confirmed by Koimoi's article.
Naseeb (BB)
Mohabbatein (BB)
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (BB)
Suhaag (BB)
Trishul (BB)

Potential contender :

Total number of Blockbusters : 15* [And there are chances of more Blockbusters].

HGOTY (6) (Old data)
1974 - Roti Kapada aur Makaan*
1975 - Sholay
1977 - Amar Akbar Anthony
1978 - Muqaddar Ka Sikandar
1979 - Suhaag
1983 - Coolie

After update :
1974* - 1975 - 1977 - 1978 - 1979 - 1980 (Shaan, if re-runs included) - 1982 (If Sholay re-runs included and some blog claimed it was Namak Halal, but I'm not sure) - 1983 - 1985 (Mard) - 1987 (3rd re-run of Sholay).
--> Around 10 HGOTY.

(2nd and 3rd HGOTY included) :
1974* (not including RKAM, but still had a successful Majboor (12th HGOTY)) - 1975 - 1977 - 1978 (Top 3 by Amitabh Bachchan, a feat only shared by Salman Khan) - 1979 - 1980 (Ram Balram) - 1981 (Lawaaris 2nd, updated by BOI) - 1982 (Namak Halal) - 1983 - 1984 (Sharabi) - 1985 (Geeraftar) - 1986 (Akhree Raasta) - 1988 (Shahenshah) - 1990 (Aaj Ka Arjun) - 1991 (Hum) - 1992 (Khuda Gawah) - 2000 (Mohabbatein) - 2001 (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham) - 2002 (Kaante) - 2005 (Bunty aur Babli).
--> 23 movies in Top 3 of the Year, otherwise 26 movies in re-runs included. On top of that, we do not have yet the complete data of many rerun movies of his. Some might have been more successful than they already were like Desh Premee that was 10th HGOTY and after reruns might have jumped 2-3 positions.
--> It signifies that Amitabh Bachchan had on average one movie in the top 3 grossers every 2/3 Years in his career that spans over 50 Years, analytically.

Apart from the first few Blockbusters, post 75, all of them were due to Stardom + Content. Of course, the one he gave during his second inning (1998-2020*) were not solely depending on him as he wasn't the n°1 Superstar that time, however, his presence did create curiosity amongst the audience and gave a boost to collections.

A unique phenomena and the only rare combination of {Megastar + Great actor}, Amitabh Bachchan !

"21 movies in top3 of the year" - Extraordinary feat.

Well, Salman khan has around same no.of films in Top3 Grossers. Most no.of films in Top2 Grossers and ofcourse most no.of Highest Grossers.

To end with - In my opinion RKAM should not be included in Amitabh Bachchan films. RKAM had Amitabh in two scenes in the background at home, one outdoor and the climax. Total footage 7-8 minutes. No songs. No heroine. No sub plot.

KKHH had Salman in a Half hour long role with a song which is more celebrated than the film itself - Saajan Jee Ghar Aaye.

1st Thing Bro TRISHUL & ZANJEER already Declared BLOCKBUSTER by NEW BOI Read This

Amitabh Will Have max. 8 or 9 HGOTY not more than That
Check This

Ab tum bologe NAMAK HALLAL to SUPERHIT diya hai mtlb BHOTY hai Not HGOTY to sir aap khud btaye AMITABH utne Bade star the 80s kbhi aisa ho skta hai kii unki movie BHOTY ho prr HGOTY naa ho :D
He Has Total 7 HGOTY
3. AAA
4. MKS
8th prr SHARAABI for 1984 or NH for 1982
Means He has Total 6 HGOTY as Lead or 2nd Lead ...RKAM me wo LEAD nahi the Supp. Star bol skte ho..
jaise DAMINI me DEOL tha , BIWI NO.1 me ANIL KAPOOR , SALMAN in NO ENTRY Etc....
Prr ye movies Inn stars ke name or poster ke saath Promote hui thi islie count krte BOI bhi count krta hai...

Amitabh Has Got Credits For every Movie even SHOLAY sign krte waqt wo STAR taak nahi the Prr rlse ke waqt SUPERSTAR the bcoz of Huge BLOCKBUSTER like ZANJEER & DEEWAR jo sirf BLOCKBUSTER he nahi unke Acting ko bhi praise mila tha COP ke baad direct DARK role play kiya tha totally Change...
Bas 1 RKAM hai jaha Support. Star the prr jaisa kii Bola ZANEER ke baad almost sbhi Movies me inka naam hota tha jaise RKAM ka maine HYDERABAD ka SILVER JUBILEE (25 weeks) ka Diya hai waha Amitabh ka naam 2nd prr hai just after MANOJ KUMAR

Dostana , Andha kanoon And Kabhi kabhi are BLOCKBUSTERS according to new BOI. even sharabi , hera pheri ( bigger grosser than kabhi kabhi) , giraftaar and aaj ka arjun will get BB verdict.

Was Amitabh bachchan B grade star that even 8th highest grosser can emerge as Blockbuster after update?

Kabhi kabhi was 8th Highest Grosser of 1976 and was a non hit in Old Boi. Just mumbai did hit level business.

Aur haa ek baat HAHK ke just baad wahi MADHURI me solo me RAJA jaisa BLOCKBUSTER diya 1995 me wo bhi AKSHAY se clash me ...2.12cr FFs jo SALMAN 15 Saal baad CROSS kiya tha 2010 me :D

I don't know why but even me for the very first time, I was learning about different actors and their positions in the industry, I started realizing the worth of each and every Superstar and always wondered why Amitabh was always so praised ? Then, I checked his records and they appeared to me weak at first glance. I always thought that he could be n°1 of his era and a Superstar or maybe a Legend due to his longetivity. However, he achieved nothing legendary for being praised everywhere. The God image status he seemed to carry with himself seemed to me a little bit overrated. Even in terms of Blockbusters, I thought he wasn't great or in terms of HGOTY. The usual excuse of "multi-starrer" as well caught my attention.

But, one day, I came across the tag of "one-man industry" he was given and not by an Indian personality, but a French one (which means that his dominance spoke volume). It was after that moment I realized it couldn't be possible to be called a "one-man industry" with these type of records. Then, how was he able to generate such mass hysteria and be able to become so much popular amongst the Indian audience ? Even in South, he was worshipped. I then came to the conclusion that either whatever people were saying about him was false (the chances are rare) or else there are flaws in numbers or mistakes in the data provided by souces. By cautiously picking information from various souces, I understood the greatness of Amitabh Bachchan. He's way bigger than our imaginations. What he saw between 1973-1988 is unmatchable and huge. A man who had 5 records in his worst phase of his career cannot be an ordinary Superstar and comparable to anyone. He was a Megastar way before the beginning of Khans career. Watch the last scene of the movie "Hero Hiralal" in the credit scenes. It's cleary written Megastar. In one award function, he was being given Lifetime Achievement Award in the Year 1990 (available on Youtube).

Khans became Legends during the 2010s decade. During the beginning of the decade 2010, SRK was the only who was constantly being compared to Mr.Bachchan. Aamir and Salman had a sort of revival from their dry phase. Till 2015, these two grew bigger than ever and SRK maintained his success, but not on par with what he tasted during the 2000s decade. It was from 2015-2020 that the general audience took Salman Khan to God-level status and the same way for Aamir Khan post Dangal's success with its Chinese collections along with Secret Superstar's performance in China. On the contrary, SRK went on a steep decline from 2015 and literally went into oblivion.

Therefore, the kids who will make the general audience from now on would only get to know about their stardom through articles and all. One way or the other, they will be more lenient to believe that Akshay Kumar is a MEGASTAR which is totally false and some have even started believing in it. The biggest stardom ever experienced is Rajesh Khanna. But those who haven't witnessed it will never understand and solely based on data that needs correction will draw conclusions. The reality is way more different than the one we see from our eyes. On indicine, Rajesh Khanna sir's movie verdicts were manipulated by putting Semi-hit on some or above average which is literally rubbish. There are so many documentaries (1975) made on him showcasing the craze he generated during his golden period.

Therefore, wait for a little bit before we get the completed, real and confirmed data of each stars. From the information provided by the article, we try to extract as much information as we can and predict for others movies as well whether it be footfalls or verdicts.

old BOI jitna bhi data amitabh ki filmo ka liya mostly D.S figure tha.

Yaar ye @VivekRai, BO ke upar kitna lamba chauda likhta hai, content same hota hai ye nikal do, woh nikal do.
Bol dena bhai itna padhne ka time kiske paas hai
1 line mein bol de wohi baat sab nikal do, @invincible can't even fight with you becoz You have incredible patience

There's no need of all these
Amitabh is bigger than Salman

Ye baat isse smjha mai to kbhi Compare he nahi krta AMITABH or DILIP se kisi bhi actor ka...mere liye inse bada star koi nahi
Ye bich me aaya Solo solo multi multi krte hue...jisne 1970-1992 (23 saal) me 84 movies kiya hai uska Compare usse krr raha hai jo 33 saal me 80 movies kiya ho....Salman bhi to krta tha naa multiple movies 1988-2009 kya haal tha uska...

@VivekRai, you triggered him na, he was commenting under bhavik's answer and that comment had nothing disrespectful. It got nasty after you both started the argument.
Then you both didn't stop
There's a vast difference between both the eras I don't need to tell you about that, cinema is different now, people are different.
Both reigned in their respective eras, it's foolish to compare both of them.
Amitabh is respected all across the country, he's a industry veteran.
He's the biggest.
